Fostering Process

How Do I Foster an AWFA Pup?

  • Once your foster application has been approved, you will receive an email invitation to join the AWFA @ UCLA Slack Channel.
  • Fosters are posted in the #westwoodfosters channel as available and assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • If you are assigned a foster pup within the #westwoodfosters channel, you will be invited to a private Slack channel which you are expected to keep notifications on throughout the week of your foster.
  • You must attend a Foster Orientation date in order to foster as of 2/1/21. Dates and Zoom Links are provided via Slack.

What Do I Do When I'm Assigned a Pup?

  • Puppies are transported to a Westwood apartment location where fosters are scheduled to pick up according to the ETA's provided by our transporters.
  • Before the arrival of your assigned pup, fosters pick up food, pee pads, toys, leash (adults), collar, waste bags (adult), and crates. The pickup time and location will be coordinated in your private Slack channel each week.
  • Fosters are provided with our Foster Checklist which entails the information needed for the first night of fostering.
  • All fosters must be willing to distribute oral medication if needed and allow for health check-in's if needed. When we pull rescues we often do not know their initial condition, so all fosters are asked to be hyper-vigillant and communicative about their puppies.
  • Fosters must drop off their puppies for adoptions as coordinated in the private Slack Channel on Saturday at 11:50 a.m.

DO NOT APPLY TO FOSTER IF:

  • You have a roommate with allergies
  • You have another territorial animal at home
  • You will not be home enough to adequately provide for your foster.
  • You will not be communicative enough to foster.

We typically welcome 1-2 litters of puppies each week as rescues are facilitated. Fosters are needed weekly to care for puppies as they are rescued.

At A Wish for Animals, we believe in #NoMamaLeftBehind. Fosters are needed for the adult mama dogs that are often transported with our puppies, in addition to other adult dogs rescued.
